Research Blog: Music Video Conventions

Now! The first thing to get down is research about music videos.

Some music tends to have an intro story or something of that nature before the actual music starts to play while some others start right at the beginning. The music video for Feels Like Summer starts off with the music playing with the introduction. Overall, the video does not really carry a specific story but goes around small parts of other people's lives. Depending on the genre of the music video it might carry a different tone with the story. An example of this, in my opinion, is the music video for the song MAPS by Maroon 5 (Did not include the music video as it used explicit language), I would feel would have carried a lighter tone but that was quickly washed away. Some song basically has the script embedded into itself. An example of this was a song called the locket by atlas. I was not able to find a music video for this but by listening to it I could almost imagine how the setting would look as if I was reading a book. Songs that theme themselves with their song usually depend on how the song is viewed so they carry a different meaning with a music video because the actions of the actors can influence how it is seen. When it comes to songs with a chill or lo-fi type of beat then the song generally doesn't have a definitive story as it more of a drifting along with whatever theme they are going for. And then there are the ones that you can't really turn into a music video like extreme EDM songs tracks but it does not totally lock them out because there are tracks like Pixel Galaxy by Snail's House which tells a story even with no person (or thing) speaking. So the main thing in a music video would be the actual video. The music carries its own importance as it has to be suitable enough to be made into a video but the video can help to bring its own meaning to a music video. The actual story of the music video can range from something dark to something really light but it should make sense with the actual music playing. It also seems like a trend to match actions or transitions with the beat or tempo of the song. This is probably to not cause the video to feel weird because if cuts happened offbeat the video would feel out of tempo. So with these things in mind, my group (mentioned previously) started to plan out the best possible plan (totally not alluding to the next post). After that will be the drawing of the Storyboard personally drawn by the writer of this blog.

In the top left, there is Pixel Galaxy by Snail's House. Top right is Feels Like Summer by Childish Gambino. The bottom left is the locket by atlas. The bottom right is the lyric of the song MAPS by Maroon 5.

(I would add a number of music videos as examples but I left it as just the ones that I mentioned.)

(Also try E.T. by Katy Perry, This is America by Childish Gambino, The Search by NF)👌🏽
